Wow, Nokia has finally seen the writings on the wall: They go Touchscreen. At least if you can trust the rumours, but when it comes to this source, it will probably be true. Only 1.7 years after the iPhone has been announced the market leader tries to keep up. So let us have a look at what we have got there:
The first phone they announced (or at least that will be announced) is the Nokia 5800 XpressMedia. The phone will feature a 3.2-inch touch screen with 640 x 360 resolution, 3.2 megapixel camera, VGA video recording, bluetooth, built in WiFi, GPS and support GSM Quadband network. With a size of 111 x 52 x 15.5 mm, the phone will be powered by a Symbian S60 Taco 5.0 OS. It will have a 150 MB internal memory, though, you can easily expand it with the microSD card slot.
Many may now go for the pictures and praise the finnish manufacturer for the innovation. But wait, did I miss something? The features are not that innovative at all. Where is the better camera? A 3,2 MP camera is ridiculous compared to the rest of the industry, especially for a “revolutionary” device. Yes, WiFi is built in, but once again this is eye candy for the majority of the customers.
Honestly, I miss the innovation in this device. If the features are true, we will now have another middle class phone that will not replace other devices, especially not a MP3-player or a digital camera. Just a touch screen added to it. So what? Is the classic keypad so much out of date? Does technological evolution now stop due to that fact that all manufacturers now have to implement touch screens for the next two years? Please, continue improving the camera, the GPS and the music player, and than work on the UI. Not the other way round.
